AMERICAN SAFETYThe Client: American Safety is one of 600 businesses owned by ITW, a $10 billion corporation. It is a Roseland, New Jersey-based industry leader in the manufacture and sale of specialized non-skid coatings. The largest markets for these coatings are military and commercial vessels. The company has diverse related activities in the coatings industry. Situation as Presented to PDL&Co: As an independently run, relatively small operating company American Safety chooses not to spend the funds for an in-house marketing executive. However, it does have periodic needs for research of potential new market opportunities or possible acquisitions. PDL&Co Solution: PDL&Co has worked with American Safety on several market research or acquisition related studies since the early 1990’s. The first was to identify non-military markets for the company’s non-skid coatings. The purpose was to help American Safety transition away from the declining military market. Other studies included: evaluation of a prospective acquisition; evaluation of the market for internal pipeline coatings; a search for new customers for a newly acquired electrical component coating.
